Her Instagram bio proudly states, “Yoga enthusiast” and she left us amazed with her pictures performing various asanas with mum Neetu Kapoor and daughter Samara, on World Yoga Day. Riddhima Kapoor Sahni never fails to inspire her 1M followers, to take up yoga and meditation.
In a candid chat Riddhima told 6Degree all about her journey. “We try, we are not perfect but as a family we definitely perform different asanas together. Every day is a whole new learning process. We are now getting Samara into it as well. Our journey with yoga started just a little before I was getting married, I joined a centre in Mumbai and I used to stand right at the back of the class and not do anything, stare at people while away my time and comeback. The instructor used to get upset because I had no enthusiasm. Today when he sees my pictures, he can't believe it’s the same person.”
Riddhima goes on to reveal that she realised the benefits of yoga, post her pregnancy, when she was trying to shed all the extra weight. “I was already into cardio and aerobics. Then mum suggested I try yoga and I shot down the idea thinking it would be boring. Now I can’t do without yoga. During pregnancy I obviously couldn’t do heavy exercises, so I started with stretches and breathing exercises. I went full throttle post my delivery. Since then, I never looked back and focused on perfecting each asana. You have to enjoy doing it, just because yoga helped me does not mean it will help someone else.” She adds that she tries to do her asanas at least three-four times a week and feels uneasy on the days she misses her routine.
Like us, Riddhima too has been extremely careful not stepping out of the house much and following all precautions to avoid Covid but that hasn’t curbed her enthusiasm. She says, “I have my instructor guide me online because he can't come home during the pandemic. Other days I manage on my own.” The creative head for ‘R’ jewelry adds that meditation and breathing are also important for one's mental health. “Each time I feel lethargic I take a yoga class because it really benefits me. Whether its Chakrasana that completely opens up your body or breathing that makes you feel at peace and enthusiastic. The head stand makes me feel relaxed by improving the blood flow and makes me glow.”
Riddhima has been practicing yoga for 10 years now and says she strives to be better each day. “I still don’t consider myself good. There is a beginner, intermediate and advanced level, I don’t even consider myself remotely advanced. There are so many variations of each asana and I constantly try to perfect them. Many more milestones to go but this is something I enjoy and know that I will get there someday, I’m not giving up.”
She informs that when it comes to her fitness regime, she does a bit of everything, but yoga has been a constant. “I still go to the gym and run on the treadmill. I've done everything from swimming, aerobics, played tennis and badminton and done functional fitness. All that is great, but I enjoy yoga. I warm up by running on the treadmill to get my heart rate up and dedicate the last 30 minutes to yoga.”
With 1M followers on Instagram, Riddhima ensures she puts social media to good use to inspire her followers through videos and pictures. “I want more people to practice it. Our respected Prime Minister, Modiji (Narendra Modi) also endorses yoga and I use my Instagram account to get more people to take it up because it is beneficial at the end of the day. I post yoga challenges once in a while and repost people's pictures. I'm flooded with messages from people who have benefitted. I also end up getting motivated myself. Today we posted three generations in the family doing yoga and people loved it.”
Riddhima ends with a laugh as she reveals while she has managed to convince bother Ranbir Kapoor to try meditation, she is yet to convince him to try yoga asanas.
